About Exceed onDemand 6 Service Release 1

Exceed onDemand Service Release 1 addresses feedback from customers and includes new features that focus on performance, manageability, and interoperability. It is available as a standalone update or integrated with Exceed onDemand 6.

Exceed onDemand 6 Service Release 1 includes the following components:

New Features

This section describes the new features available for Exceed onDemand. For information on the features added in previous releases, contact your Hummingbird Connectivity sales representative.

General

Kerberos Support

Exceed onDemand now supports Kerberos authentication.

SSL Encryption

Exceed onDemand is now available as a Strong Encryption version only.

Improved XDMCP Communication

You can now specify more than one host in the XDMCP Indirect and Query dialog boxes; if the first host is unavailable, the proxy attempts to connect to the next host in the list.

New XDMCP Startup Dialog Box

XDMCP Query/Indirect dialog box is now available. This dialog box opens when you start a session using the XDMCP Query or Indirect startup modes. Use this dialog box to specify a host name or IP address, or click Passive to force Exceed onDemand into Passive mode until the server resets.

New OpenGL Options

The folowing options have been added to the OpenGL page in Xconfig:

Cache Attributes  Caches attributes on the proxy side to improve performance.

Fast Replies  If you select this option, in some cases the proxy does not wait for a reply from Exceed onDemand Client before sending a reply to the X application. Selecting this option may improve performance.

Migration from Previous Versions of Exceed onDemand

Cluster settings for Windows, UNIX, and Linux Servers, Server Manager, and Exceed onDemand Client for Windows now migrate automatically.

Backwards Compatibility

When attempting to connect to Exceed onDemand Server 5.0 with a version 6.0 Exceed onDemand Client or Server Manager, a warning message shows the Client and Server version and indicates an acceptable combination.

OpenSSL

Exceed onDemand now uses OpenSSL version 0.9.7l.

Exceed onDemand Client

Client Support for Linux Platforms

Exceed onDemand Client for Linux is a native Linux application that is designed to run on platforms that satisfy the following requirements:

Exceed onDemand Client for Linux has been tested on the following Linux distributions:

Refer to the following Web page for an updated list of tested platforms:

http://connectivity.hummingbird.com/products/nc/eod/
index.html

For information on installing Exceed onDemand Client for Linux, see the Exceed onDemand Adminstrator's Guide.

Client Support for IBM AIX

Exceed onDemand Client can now run on IBM AIX.

Support for Windows Vista

Exceed onDemand Client now supports Windows Vista.

New Screen Settings

New screen settings are available on the Xconfig Screen page.

Multiple Color Depths Support  Enables advertisement of all supported visuals. This lets certain X applications display correctly (for example, if 8-bit PseudoColor or 24-bit TrueColor is the default visual on a high-color video device). Clearing this option means that Exceed onDemand advertises only the default visual.

Sun Microsystems Compatible Colormap  Enables Sun Microsystems-compatible colors and affects the default settings of the PseudoColor server visual. Selecting this option reverses the allocation: black is allocated to cell one, and white is allocated to cell zero. By default, the X server allocates the color black to cell zero, and the color white to cell one when PseudoColor is enabled.

Save Geometry On Exit   Exceed onDemand saves the Client desktop window geometry (that is, window position, size, and state) when you exit the server and restores it when you start the server and enter single window mode.

Native Desktop Behavior Improvements

If the Xconfig Screen page option Root Mouse Actions To X is enabled, the native desktop is shaded as a visual cue to users. This feature is available only for Exceed onDemand Client installed on Windows Vista.

New Tools Menu Option

The Always On Top option is now available for Single Window Mode. If this option is selected, the X client window appears in the foreground of your computer screen.

Importing and Exporting Xconfig Files

You can now use Xconfig Manager to import and export Xconfig files.

Exceed onDemand Server

Disabling Nodes

Administrators can now disable a cluster node, which can be useful when the node machine requires maintenance or upgrades since new sessions are not started on the disabled node.

Broadcasting Messages

Administrators can now broadcast messages to users on a specific node in a cluster.

Load Balancing

Load balancing can now be set to None. When this option is selected, the node that the user specifies in the connection dialog box or in the connection document receives the startup request for the session.

PAM Support

The PAM (Pluggable Authentication Modules) option is now available for Exceed onDemand Servers installed on HP-UX.

Startup Banner

Administrators can now set a startup banner that displays when a user launches a new session or resumes a suspended session.

Field Selection

Administrators can now select the fields to display in the Server Manager information pane.

Session Logging

Detailed session information is now logged.

Xconfig Settings

You can now apply some Xconfig settings without resetting the server.

New Protocol Extensions

XINERAMA

Enabling this extension allows applications and window managers to use two or more physical displays as one display. The display behavior may differ depending on the window manager used. If you enable this extension, ensure that the Use All Monitors setting (Xconfig, Screen Definitions) for screen 0 is also enabled.

XFree86-Misc

Enabling this extension allows an X application to query various keyboard and mouse settings (such as the keyboard repeat rate or the middle mouse button emulation setting).

XFree86-VidMode

Enabling this extension allows an X application to query various video mode settings, such as the refresh rate of the monitor.

XFree86-Bigfont

Enabling this extension improves performance when working with big fonts such as CJK or Unicode by using shared memory. This extension does not apply to Exceed onDemand Servers running on Windows operating systems.

Server Architecture Improvements

Exceed onDemand Cluster Manager and Proxy Manager components are now merged to simplify Exceed onDemand Server administration and reduce the number of ports used by Exceed onDemand.

X11 R7.1 Support

Exceed onDemand supports the latest X11 protocol, X11 R7.1. Exceed onDemand now supports the Damage, Xfixes, and Composite extensions through implementation of the latest X11 R7.1 code.

These extensions are utilized in Project Looking Glass (PLG). PLG uses Java technology and was created to work with Solaris and Linux desktop environments. It provides an improved user experience with the desktop and with applications via 3D windowing and visualization capabilities.

Composite

Drawing occurs in a manner that allows for flicker-free rendering and real transparency. A client can request that all drawing to a window is redirected to an off-screen buffer. By using drawing requests from both the core protocol and the Render extension, the compositing manager can create special effects such as translucent windows.

XFixes

This extension is a collection of improvements in the core protocol. It changes how the X server and clients interact with fundamental parts of the window system.

Damage

This extension lets applications track modified regions of drawables.

IPv6 Support

Exceed onDemand supports IPv6 for the following platforms:

New Setting

The new EodShowShareConfirmDialog setting in the cluster.cfg file defines whether a confirmation dialog appears when a user shares a session. By default, the value of EodShowShareConfirmDialog is 0 and no confirmation dialog appears. To show a confirmation dialog, set the value of EodShowShareConfirmDialog to 1 in the cluster.cfg file.

Font-Related Improvements

New encoding files and corresponding font aliases have been added to Exceed onDemand to provide support for the following character sets:

Xstart

Environment Variable Support

Xstart now supports client-side environment variables. This feature applies only to Exceed onDemand Client for Windows.

OpenSSH

Exceed onDemand now uses OpenSSH 4.4, which offers improved IPv6 support.

Hummingbird Deployment Wizard

Browser Support

Hummingbird Deployment Wizard now supports deployment with Firefox.

Known Issues

These are issues that Hummingbird Connectivity is aware of at the time of release.

General

Registration of Exceed onDemand Ports for Windows Firewall on XP/2003

When you install Exceed onDemand on Windows XP/2003, services are registered with the Microsoft firewall. Due to a platform limitation, if you install on drive letter M through Z, the path is stored incorrectly and the firewall exceptions are left behind after you uninstall the product. In this case, you can remove the exceptions manually.

OpenGL Application Sharing

OpenGL applications can be shared only by users running Exceed onDemand Client for Windows.

Xconfig and Xstart File Migration

Prefixing Xconfig (.cfg) or Xstart (.xs) file names with the Exceed onDemand version string, 5_Passive.cfg, for example, can result in the current version of the file being overwritten by the old file during migration.

IPv6 Support

Exceed onDemand does not support IPv6 for HP-UX 11.x platforms, or for XDMCP Broadcast mode.

Exceed onDemand Client

Client Uninstallation

Due to platform limitations, non-administrator users who install or deploy Exceed onDemand Client cannot perform a complete uninstallation on Windows. Some files remain in the following installation paths after a system reboot:

Exceed onDemand Components from Deployed Client

Administrators must deploy all Exceed onDemand components before non-administrative users can launch them from deployed Exceed onDemand Client on Windows platforms. This is necessary because non-administrative users may not have the proper rights to install these components, especially Help files, when needed.

Exceed Macro Compatibility

Exceed onDemand does not recognize all macro commands for Exceed; therefore, before launching Xstart files created with Exceed, you must ensure that the command specified in the Xstart file does not contain the Exceed-specific @: macro. You will not be able to launch the Xstart file otherwise.

Session Resuming or Sharing

If you suspend a session that is configured to use truecolor or effective truecolor, and resume the session on a machine set to use 256 colors, you will experience display problems. The same is true when sharing a session from one machine to another. When resuming or sharing a session, ensure that the session has an equal or higher color depth setting than the original suspended or shared session.

Exceed onDemand Server

Extension Support

The Composite extension may have reduced functionality when Limit Windows Exposures or Backing Store is selected on the Xconfig Performance page.

Xstart

Server Host Application Command

If you select the Server Host Application startup method and do not enable the Run Command In Shell option, adding an ampersand (&) at the end of the command you specify will cause an error when you run the Xstart file.

Xstart File Migration

As a result of a more secure encryption algorithm for passwords, after you migrate from Exceed onDemand Server 4.5 to version 6.0, the password boxes in migrated Xstart files are blank. The file, however, is still functional.

To replace the old password with a new, more secure password, open the Xstart file for editing and then save the file.

TELNET Startup Method

When migrating Exceed onDemand 4.x Xstart files, ensure that the password prompt on the Startup page of the Xstart Settings dialog box is set to password: (ending with a colon) for all Xstart files that use the TELNET startup mode. Otherwise, the specified remote command will fail to run once your X session begins.

Secure Shell Startup Method

For public key authorization with keys that have a passphrase, type the passphrase in the Password box of the Exceed onDemand Xstart dialog box and click Settings to open the Xstart Settings dialog box for the Secure Shell startup method. In the Remote Prompts area on the Startup page of the dialog box, click Add to open the Optional Remote Prompt dialog box and specify the expected prompt and the @p macro as required.

Hummingbird Deployment Wizard

HCDT-Based Product Deployment On Windows Vista

You can now create Exceed onDemand Client deployment packages for users running Windows Vista. To install deployed projects on Windows Vista, you must configure settings on each client machine. For more information, see Configuring Windows Vista for Deployed Product Installation.

File Space for Projects

When creating deployment projects with Hummingbird Deployment Wizard, you should ensure that enough file space is available to build deployment projects. Insufficient space may result in unexpected program behavior.

Local Cache Image and Multilingual User Interface Support

When installing Hummingbird Deployment Wizard on a Windows XP or Server 2003 operating system with multilingual user interface support, selecting the Local Cache Image option during setup will not create a cache image.

You can implement a workaround by running Hummingbird Deployment Wizard setup in a specific language and using the Local Cache Image option.

Per-User and All-User Projects

Per-user and All-user deployment projects should not be mixed on the same client machine.

Deployment Projects Update Wizard

Projects Update Wizard supports updates between patches. To update projects between versions, rebuild the project using Project Deployment Wizard.
